So our ventures the other night took us to Matsuya in Great Neck. I'm not going to lie, we drove past the place a few times and from the outside and the tasteful, yet simple decor, you may assume this place is generic, but it is anything but! You know it's the -real- deal when half the tables are taken by Japanese customers.

Our latest trip took us to Thom Thom Steak and Seafood in Wantagh. The restaurant is divided in two, with a bar on one side and a dinning room, with a semi-enclosed back room on the other. They have private rooms available upstairs as well. The decor is modern and rich, with earthy browns, wood, classical fans and large black and white photographs.

Our latest travels took us to busy Franklin Avenue in Garden City to enjoy a meal at SushiYa. The restaurant has an awesome outdoor seating area in the back and inside there is a long hibachi bar on one side on the restaurant. There are low tables and chairs, which are surprisingly very comfortable, filled with customers in the middle.

Rounding out our first trip out to Eastern Long Island was Sen. This restaurant has a great location in the busy heart of Sag Harbor. The restaurant has a swanky but relaxed feel, with a cool and tranquil decor mixed with an industrial twist. The place has modern paper lights, painted green walls and the booths come adorned with pillows.

The last spot we visited was Masago Neo Asian Fusion, located in Oceanside. The restaurant is celebrating its grand opening, having been feeding Japanese food lovers for 3 weeks now.

Another night, another evening filled with sushi. Our latest travels took us to Sushi Ya in New Hyde Park. The restaurant is affiliated with the location in Garden City and has a similar, yet slightly different menu. The restaurant is nestled in the back of a strip mall located off Jericho Turnpike. It is very large and open inside.

Our latest sushi endeavor took us to Kumo in Plainview. The restaurant is in a large shopping center. A little dark inside, the restaurant is intimate, cozy and busy. There is one private room with a few tables and a sushi bar in the back. Japanese styled wooden and paper screens add a decorate touch and divide tables to optimize the space. Also decorative are the exposed wooden walls and the brick behind the sushi bar.

Our latest trip took is to Sawa in Syosset. Located right on Jericho turnpike it may be easy to pass by this place, but don't! Once you walk through the door you are greeted by large inviting comfortable chairs.

Our latest trip was to Bonbori, right off New York Avenue in Huntington. The restaurant does outdoor garden seating only in the summer. The garden area is very scenic, with a great ambiance. It is decorated with wrought iron tables sporting large umbrellas and decorative fountains and plants.

Our latest adventure was to Azuma in Greenlawn. The restaurant was small and homey. It was more traditional with Japanese styled art and curtains and large fish decorating the walls. The place had an inviting scent. There was a small crowd, but you could tell many were regular customers or locals. They have a large menu, offering Pan-Asian dishes and a large selection of specials to choose from.

Last night we ventured into Mumon in Garden City. It is located right on Franklin Avenue, where Saks Fifth Avenue used to be located. We are immediately taken aback by the size on the restaurant. It is very large. On one side there are long booths separated by see through black dividers on one side, with tables in the middle and the other side has a full bar on the right and huge boxed shaped booths in the middle.

We recently visited Ozumo in Bethpage. Named after the "Super Bowl of Sumo wrestling" the restaurant is nestled in a strip mall on Hicksville Road. There is a large square sushi bar when you walk in and a few steps will lead you up a section of tables with chairs that rest of the floor and cut-outs underneath them so your legs can freely dangle.

Our latest stop was at Lotus in Farmingdale. Located right on Conklin Avenue, in the middle of downtown, this place was hard to miss. The decor was a mix of traditional and modern, with pendant lighting and textured walled art. All the servers were decked in all black with these adorable sushi ties.
As we sat down to eat the place was slowing filling up. Our server Steven took very good care of us, keeping our glasses full and bringing clean plates, as did everyone else like Jim, the gracious owner Michael and our awesome chef Tony.

Shiki caters to the Hamptons crowd, but still retains reasonable prices. They have an extensive selection of alcohol covering wines, tequila, scotches, cocktails, sake and of course beer. Every dish we serve is beautifully presented and you can tell they put thought into the entire meal experience.

They did have a DJ that played good music all night. I remember telling Michael that the music was actually awesome which you won't find at a more traditional sushi restaurant.
Overall, it reminded us of Aji 53 a little in that both are not the more traditional places. Our coats are checked and the gracious manager Ron seats us. First time we ever had someone take our coats.

Our latest trip was to Bamboo 52, right in the heart of Hell's Kitchen in NYC. This place is definitely city chic, and is a sushi lounge. They have a live DJ spinning trendy pop music, televisions and blinking art pieces adorn the walls, lounge styled booths fill the place and over the sushi bar proudly hangs a disco ball

On our latest sushi adventure we ended up at Sakura in East Meadow. It was their Grand Opening and we wish them the best of luck. It is one of the smaller and more modest sushi places we have been to, tucked away in a small shopping strip on Newbridge Road. They made great usage of the space, placing a long bench along one side of the restaurant and tables on the other.

We strolled in Shari after finding some parking close by. The restaurant, across the street from what looked like houses, was in a quaint area of downtown. There was an area outside with some high tables and lounge style chairs. The interior was similar any had an awesome vibe. One side had a large bar and the other side had lounge style booths and an upstairs loft.

On our last trip to Florida we dined at Dragonfly in Orlando. This is their second location, having a restaurant in Gainesville for many years. Dragonfly is a modern establishment who knows how to be tactful and trendy without being over the top. The restaurant has a great upscale feel and is very spacious.

Another trip to Florida led us to the posh sushi restaurant Echo, part of the Breakers Hotel in West Palm. This place is definitely hip. There is a large outdoor area in the front and inside is a large and elongated sushi bar that merges with a full bar.

We ended our Florida trip at Sushi Jo. They have a few locations and we visited their restaurant in West Palm Beach. The restaurant is large and divided in two, with tables on one side and the sushi bar and high bar tables on the other. The restaurant has an earthy, laid back feel with minimal modern Japanese art and large decorative mirrors.

We headed down South to Miami for a meal at Mr. Yum. Not quite in the heart of the city, you'll have to search a little to find this place, but it is worth it. The restaurant is on the small side but very clean with bright orange colors and crisp white tables. There was trendy and fashionable art and soft club music playing.

We ended our week of sushi at Seito in Sandlake. Seito is the Peter Luger of steak. The family owned business has a large sushi bar, which was manned by at least 4 talented chefs. The booths were large and inviting and the decor was pleasant with pendant lighting, textured walls and fusion art around the restaurant. The manager Chris sat us and next we were in the hands of their chefs
We were immediately blown away by our first dish, Kobe Ishiyaki.

We started off our Florida sushi extravaganza at Bento Cafe in downtown Orlando. It has a great location, right in the middle of the action. The decor was hip and updates and the restaurant had televisions throughout it (and in the bathroom too). There was faint club music playing and the while the places is modernized, it is not intimidated and actually quite informal - you seat yourself as you walk in. Our knowledge server Tanya sat us in the back and it was on. We started with Momokawa Pearl Sake.

We traveled a bit north, towards Winter Park and found ourselves at Wazzabi. We were immediately impressed as we pulled up. They have a very cool exterior, with a large outdoor seating area. Inside they have a large sushi bar and a full drink bar. They had an updated interior with bright, multi colored lights, but it was still intimate. The large restaurant is divided in two and the other side offers full hibachi services. Pinkie happily sat us and quickly brought us some popular appetizers.
The first thing we tried was Shrimp Stuffed Wonton.

We're ready to move to Deland. This restaurant is in a tie for 2nd place with TAIKO in NY thus far. It's a traditional sushi restaurant located in a shopping center, similar to TOKYO in Jersey. No fancy exterior or interior. Nice lighting inside, clean bathrooms and nice size sushi bar. Focusing strictly on the food, most can't tell the difference between SUPERIOR QUALITY sushi and low grade fish. This place has top quality fish and it was out of the water fresh.

CALI
WARNING: Stay away if you plan to order a california roll, please! Don't waste their time.
We visited both of their locations. Our second night in Cali took us to Harney Sushi in Oceanside. While the names and some of the menu are the same, they have completely different vibes. We sat by the dj booth in this location and the place was definitely busy.
I repeat from the San Diego review, before I even get to the amazing food, let me just say that Harney Sushi is one of the best sushi establishments we have been to.

NEW JERSEY
Man, if this place was located on Long Island or even in Queens, I'd never eat anywhere else. It's not because they have an amazing selection of specialty sushi. It's because the restaurant is just awesome, the people working there are awesome and they're willing to make whatever sushi we wanted. More importantly, they took our very complicated order and made some BANGING sushi, as good as any place we've been to date. Best bang for your buck - this place guaranteed. They have HIBACHI, a major plus. Eat in the hibachi section then walk over to chinese and finish off with sushi. Want desert? They've got an amazing selection of fruit and cakes, unlike any other chinese buffet. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
